Villa Sumaya – Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

February 1, 2025 - February 8, 2025

Our first trip to Guatemala!

I have been wanting to go to Guatemala since 1974 when I first learned about the Mayan culture!

Villa Sumaya has been featured in Yoga Journal, Travel Advisor, and HuffPost and is almost always booked well in advance in the high season. Group leaders return year after year, so finding an opportunity to squeeze into the lineup was a long shot, but I persevered. Through a stroke of good fortune, an unexpected cancellation, and being in the right place at the right time, I was able to snag the best week of the winter – February 1st through 8th, 2025 for another epic The Hard and The Soft Yoga & Meditation Adventure.

Your Home Base

Villa Sumaya is this totally gorgeous natural refuge majestically located on the shores of Lake Atitlan in Santa Cruz la Laguna, Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. Aldous Huxley once declared Lake Atitlan “the most beautiful lake in the world,” and its setting in the Guatemalan Highlands, offers the perfect combination of natural beauty, mountain landscapes, and traditions of Mayan culture. The word “Atitlan” come from the combination of two nahuati words, “Atil” meaning water, and “Titlan” meaning between, or “between the waters”. It is surrounded by three spectacular volcanoes that harmonize to create a unique setting for some pretty fantastic sunsets and sunrises.

Your Day’s Activities

Each day will begin with practice – personal prayer, meditation, and movement. Our trip to this remote wellness center, located in the heart of the Altiplano, is an opportunity for cultural immersion into the most deeply rooted indigenous Mayan culture. Possible excursions and ceremonies include tours of local villages and marketplaces, a visit to a permaculture farm, a waterfall hike, as well as hiking in the mountains, walking tours, kayaking on the lake, spa treatments, and Mayan fire ceremonies.

In December I will send out a list of excursions and ceremonies with the costs and you will have the opportunity to sign up for various activities. We need to plan these in advance as February is high season and many of the tour guides and curanderas (ceremony leaders) book up early.

Your Nourishment

Homemade buffets are abundant and freshly prepared daily. Each meal is balanced to meet your nutritional needs. Breakfast buffets include a main dish, granola, yogurt, fruit and daily specials. Lunch buffets include a hearty vegetarian main course, organic greens, homemade bread and a local fruit platter. Dinner buffets include soup, vegetarian entrée, seasonal side dishes, organic greens and a scrumptious dessert. Savor fresh breads and house-made tortillas.
